Fukuoka Southern Area
3-Night / 4-Day Cycling Journey

The Southern Area of Fukuoka is a region where the essence of Japan quietly endures a place of historic castle towns, post stations, and peaceful rural landscapes that reflect the country’s timeless charm. Far from the rush of the city, this is where you can experience a more refined and authentic side of Japan one that reveals its beauty through tradition, nature, and the warmth of local life. This 3-night, 4-day cycling journey invites you to explore this serene region, pedaling through gentle countryside and discovering the elegance of “Deep Japan”.

  • DAY1

    Asakura Area

    Your cycling journey begins in Asakura, a peaceful land colored by rivers, history, and the quiet rhythm of rural life. Enjoying the countryside scenery and river views, you'll make your way to your first destination.

    First, we head to the ruins of Akizuki Castle, where the atmosphere of the old samurai town still lingers. It's famous as a spot for autumn foliage and spring cherry blossoms. You can feel the charm of the townscape. At a traditional teahouse within the area, we enjoy homemade mochi and tea.

    Next, we head to Shindo Distillery, which has won numerous awards worldwide. Here, you can learn about the process of making whisky. Those who wish can also experience hand-filling whisky directly from the cask into bottles.

    That night's lodging was at Harazuru Onsen Taisen-kaku. After enjoying a luxurious Japanese meal, you can soothe your body in the hot springs. The next morning's breakfast buffet also features many dishes made with local ingredients.

    Ukiha area

    On Day 2 in the Ukiha area, we'll first visit Roadside Station Ukiha, where you'll find an abundance of local ingredients. Ukiha is famous as a fruit-producing region, so be sure to enjoy Ukiha's fruits and ingredients at the terrace seating, where you can take in the beautiful scenery. Afterwards, we'll visit Ukiha Inari Shrine, lined with 92 torii gates. From the summit, you can overlook the Ukiha area, making it a recommended photo spot.

    Next, we'll visit Shirakabe Street in Yoshii Town, where the historic streetscape of the Edo period remains preserved. Here, you can enjoy Japan's traditional townscape. Stopping by cafes and specialty shops is also recommended.

    For dinner, we'll enjoy a Japanese-French fusion course meal at a restaurant in Ukiha run by a chef who trained in France for ten years. Savor dishes made with an abundance of local ingredients.

    Stay at Minamo Traditional Inn, a lodging in a designated Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, housed in a restored 100-year-old traditional Japanese home. The inn's concept is “Immerse yourself in Ukiha's way of life, sustained by water.” We offer a wonderful lodging experience where you can experience the story of Ukiha, a place blessed with pristine water resources.

    Yame area

    On Day 3, explore Yame, a region famous for its premium tea and traditional craftsmanship.

    The Yame area visited on Day 3 is famous as a tea-producing region. The first stop is the Yame Central Tea Plantation, where you can enjoy breathtaking views of the tea fields. The scenery from the observation deck is truly spectacular. The observation deck also features a café where you can enjoy drinks and ice cream made with tea harvested right here.

    Next up is Shiraki Kogei, a lantern shop. The Yame area is famous for its lantern-making industry. Shiraki Kogei manufactures and sells traditional Japanese lanterns in modern, stylish designs. They're also highly popular as interior decor. Here, you can experience painting these lanterns yourself. You can take the lantern you create home as a souvenir of your trip.

    Dinner is served at the restaurant attached to the lodging facility. Guests can enjoy a course meal featuring ingredients from the Yame area. A French chef who honed his skills at a prestigious Swiss restaurant presents dishes in a new style that incorporates traditional local cooking techniques.

    Stay at NIPPONIA HOTEL Yame Sojima. The hotel's concept is “A heart-racing hotel in the new world of Japanese tea.” True to its concept, the pleasant aroma of Yame tea fills the guest rooms. Enjoy the charming, quintessentially Japanese space created by renovating a historic building.

    Yanagawa area

    On your final day, visit Yanagawa, a charming castle town known for its canals and poetic atmosphere.

    On Day 4 in the Yanagawa area, you'll experience the famous river cruise. You'll tour the waterways that were once used as castle moats by boat. Another highlight is the boatman singing traditional songs known in the Yanagawa area.

    "Yanagawa is also famous for its eel. During the river cruise, you can enjoy an eel meal on board. Have a wonderful time."

    The final part of the tour involves strolling along the streets of the Yanagawa area. This district, lined with traditional shops alongside modern cafes and boutiques, is a popular tourist destination for foreigners. Afterward, we'll head to Yanagawa Station, where the tour concludes.
